Architectural approach of an existing building

The aim of this architectural approach of an existing building was to identifiy forms and the structure principles of the building in order to uderstand and present them according to three areas:
-an analysis of the building itself
-a physical model
-a text revealing the historical context of the building and the biography of the architect.

The Exeter Library built by Louis Isidor Kahn, was under construction from 1965 to 1974. Louis Kahn imagine a building highly spiritual, celebrating books and their contents.
The building is a temple, a book sanctuary. This metaphor is developed by the architect through the modest exterior aspect, reinforced by the use of bricks and stricltly symetrical facades that give an austere image of the building.
In the inside, the use of raw materials such as concrete and wood attracts and rises the reader's eyes towaerds the book shelves. A gigantic empty space is created in the center of the squared plan, lets the sunlight enter the building and provides enough light for the visitors to circulate inside. Little windows on the facades are meant to be for personnal use: in fact, intimate and personal desk are installed along the main exterior walls providing natural light for the reader without deteriorating the books.
